Day 1 of Another New Life

Yay! I surpassed the expectations of Day 1 in my new job! And for this, I am welcomed to "The Corporate World." When I first began seeking a career, I really wanted to be in non-profit, because that is where I felt I could make the greatest impact on this world. After doing it, however, I have realized, that it is an entirely thankless profession with little benefits, and little pay. The good part of it, however, was not having to watch training videos for hours on end, preparing you for the job. No, the non-profit sector really likes to throw you in the fire to see how you put it out. Mostly this is because, like stated above, workers are grossly underpaid and overworked, and so really the survival of the fittest applies.

Well, I was dreading watching the training videos, and managed to procrastinate beginning them until after lunch. When I finally did pop in the first tape, I was immediately drawn back to college, when my body learned how to "sleep" without totally loosing conscienceness, while still remaining to "appear" like I was paying attention.

By the second video, I was aware that occasionally, I was relaxed enough to really begin dosing off, and did, perhaps make a sound or two that might give the impression that I was catching some zzz's. Thank god I was tucked in the back of the building where no one could have heard me unless they were trying to catch me, and I feel fairly confident that I have not solicited any haters yet.

At the "intermission break" in the third video, I needed to walk around. Seriously, I was snoozing on my first day, what kind of employee am I? So I checked my hotmail and yahoo accounts, replied to my landlord that his crappy shower arrangement busted on me this morning, so my day started in a sulky bath, and...., well...anyway...

By the time I got some water and relieved myself from lunch, I was awake enough to actually pay attention to what the videos were trying to teach me. The material had much improved since I was last paying attention, and as a dutiful employee and student, I did take a few notes. Once I got past the idea that this was a waste of my time, I really did enjoy listening to what Roy Williams had to say. He is afterall, The Wizard of Sales...

I liked his approach and his ideas of generating advertisements in industries that were not specific to industry. I learned things about listening and watching, and how people react to being manipulated by media. I love media, and needless to say, I am looking forward to the rest of the six tapes left on how to develop strategies that will increase business for my clients, and put money in my bank account.

Like I announced at our daily meeting, "I feel like a revved up dog, tied to a leash, ready to run around and do something..." Perhaps this was a bit premature of a confession to my co-workers and boss, since they don't know me yet, but it is true. And soon enough they'll know me to be able to make that association.

Man, after all this learning, I need a beer...

Welcome to the team! I am glad that someone else needs to drink beer at the end of EVERY day. I'm looking forward to seeing you attack the world when you are released from your dog chain. =) Seriously, I think you are going to do great...just work your ass off!
